The Windrush Years Part 2

- ‘They fought as men’
- West Indians popular as musicians
- When Hitler was defeated, British attitudes the West Indians changed abruptly – ‘Isn’t it about time they went back to their homes?’
- People were just putting up with them, they didn’t really want them there
- Most West Indians went back to their country after the war, but some reenlisted for further military service
- West Indians usually found work in the US when bad weather conditions destroyed their crops and income, however, new immigration laws meant that they couldn’t just go there to get work
- The young men that were in the military wanted to go back to England for the opportunities that it offered
- The people that were shipping West Indians to England were deemed irresponsible by MPs as there were no jobs waiting here for them
