- They came to a different country from what they had dreamed/read about
- ‘Alien, strange, cold landscape’
- Black people were surprised with the English people’s indifference and ignorance towards them when they came over
- They thought they would be welcome
- White people thought the Black people had a lot of unpleasant habits
- Slogan ‘Keep Britain White’ – people grew hostility and resentment towards the Black people
- They weren’t people they were ‘Darkies’
- As the numbers of Black people grew so did the hostility
- They felt isolated and lonely
- They missed their freedom and companionship
